Heave - solo version (2019)
SOLO | ELECTROACOUSTIC 14:30
INSTRUMENTATION
solo voice
Heave, in this version for solo voice and electronics, was commissioned by soprano Juliet Fraser and Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge. The text was written by Cordelia Lynn. The electronics were created at IRCAM with computer music designer Augustin Muller.
Heave solo is featured on Juliet Fraser’s album Spilled Out from Tangles, released on the Huddersfield Contemporary Records (HCR) Label in April 2020.
A music video of Heave solo, directed by Noémie Dahan, was commissioned by Time:Spans Festival 2020.
From the CD liner notes:
Eldar and Lynn describe Heave as ‘a work that questions the boundaries between matter; between forms… that tells a story of growth: out of the earth, into one’s own body and, finally, memory’. In its original version, written for EXAUDI in 2018, the piece is scored for six voices and electronics and uses the slow dialogue between two soloists to convey a drawn-out, suspended process of growing apart. This version for solo voice goes further in its questioning of boundaries: all distinctions blurred now as the single protagonist slips from earth into skin, body into light.
The score is available for rent from Éditions Durand.
“...Heave Solo tells the story of growth not only through text, but also through somewhat unreal, lingering, ever-swelling sounds that accompany Fraser and make this piece a truly distinguished one.”
